31 Days to Becoming Less Stressed, More Refreshed. Day 4: Stay Calm

Stay Calm - The Cozy Nook

Stress can make us feel frazzled, and feeling frazzled can make us feel stressed. It’s a vicious cycle!

To break the cycle, we need to stay calm and
remain composed, even in tough circumstances.

It isn’t always easy to stay calm when we are feeling overworked, overwhelmed, or overlooked. However, it really is essential to our well-being.

When I feel frazzled, I don’t like it. I am on high alert, rushing around, feeling emotionally sensitive, and out of control. Sometimes I think we think we are going to gain control of a situation if we frenzy ourselves into high gear, but oftentimes we do not gain control. We feel less in control. Then not only are our circumstances out of control, but we, also, are out of control. Really, it’s a no win situation.

If we can address our chaotic situations with a calm disposition, we remain in control and offer ourselves more potential for serenity.

Functioning from a state of calm helps us
to be at peace with our current circumstances.

Functioning from a state of calm gives,
rather than depletes, strength.

Functioning from a state of calm maintains order
so we can think and act more clearly.

Staying calm may sound appealing but it can be very difficult to achieve. It requires a lot of discipline.

Learning to stay calm relies upon our ability to fight the inner battle, against negative emotions and degrading thoughts.

What are some things you can do if you are starting to feel frazzled?

  • Close your eyes and take a few deep breaths. Switch your focus and restore your mind and body with some deep breathing.
  • Think positively. Take captive of negative thoughts and replace them with positive, energizing thoughts. If you are thinking positively, it is nearly impossible to feel frazzled.
  • Distance yourself from the situation or person for a bit. When a circumstance goes awry, you may need some time away from what is causing you stress.
  • Avoid speaking hastily. Harsh or overly emotional words will only get us into more trouble. Keep quiet and keep your peace.
  • Take some time to regroup. Pray, rest, or do something you enjoy.

Take action: Staying calm is a discipline. Try to stay as calm as possible today.
